iPhone Important Display Message

Latest iPhone warning: Non-Genuine Screen Warning / Important Display Message

In the latest attempt to limit third-party repairs, Apple is monitoring for non-genuine screen replacements.

On Apples latest devices starting from the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max devices you could see this ‘Important Display Message’ if the phone detects that the screen has been replaced.

Apple claims this message is displayed when a non-genuine screen is used, however that is not true. If you were to unbox two brand new iPhone’s of the same model and swap the screens you would still get the warning message.

The truth is each phone has a custom chip that is soldered on to the original screen it was sold with, therefor it does not make a difference if an original Apple screen was used or the cheapest one on the market. If the chip that is soldered on the original screen is not swapped over to any new screen being installed then the message will appear.

So if you recently replaced you screen by a third-party without the original chip from the screen being swapped over, you can expect to see the Important Display Message appears on the lock screen for four days and in the Settings app for 15 days.

After that the message will remain in the About page within Settings. The message states that Apple was “unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple display” with a link to learn more.

Unlike the 2016 “error 53” where apple caused the phones to be bricked with Touch ID after non-genuine screen replacement. These notifications don’t affect the owner’s ability to use their display.

By doing this it allows Apple not to service your phone under the 1 year manufacturers warranty.

Apple warns that a non-genuine display can cause problems with multi-touch and cause brightness and color issues, as well as unintentional battery drain.

Although it is true and good for user awareness they are just trying to kill third-party repairs. If the phone is serviced by a professional repair shop with good quality standard parts then these issues would never arise.

Apple says owners might see a further notification stating that “Apple has updated the device information for this iPhone”. Which means, “Apple has updated the device information maintained for your iPhone for service needs, safety analysis, and to improve future products.” In reality not to service your device under warranty if it was eligible.
